Let’s start with how this idiot judge with little sense of the history of our nation or the conflicts in our Constitution got to think that our nation was colorblind. The judge grew up in a community in which housing deeds had restrictive covenants prohibiting the sale of homes to people of color or to Jews. He was also the son of the chief executive of the Bethlehem Steel plant in his town which gave him considerable social access and a whole bunch of people who wanted stay on the good side of his family. He went off to a private boarding school which I suspect was not a hotbed of multiculturalism. By the time he got to Harvard he knew who his friends were and was not adventurous in meeting new people. So of course, he saw no need for affirmative action. He lived in the best of all possible worlds – a world of expected privilege.
Then of course we have to give a nod to his personal corruption. When Roberts joined the court, his wife looked for a new career in law. She settled on recruiting talent for law firms which made her more than $10 million. The judge seems to have never thought that law firms might favor doing business with his wife to attract talent known to Roberts. Another case for the ethically challenged.
Showing a massive inability to exert any leadership as the chief judge he thinks that he has to get prior agreement of all justices before he can introduce a code of ethical conduct. Given that at least two of the other justices (more on them in future postings) are too busy raking in plutocrat cash and gifts it will probably be pretty hard to get unanimous agreement until their insatiable appetites are satisfied. But of course, the chief judge could simply publicly issue a code of ethical conduct and demand that justices sign up and live by that code. The code could be as simple as stating “Yes, you buy your own lox and bagels. Anything more than that you just say ‘no’.”
This pathetic little man is doing all he can to subvert democracy and progress. Term limits for the court – certainly. Packing the court – absolutely, although the new justices would probably consider working with Roberts, Alito, and Thomas a hostile work environment.
