The war on Christmas is rolling along and Fox News has the proof! So, a while back the Daily Kos published an account of a Fox News show hosted by a guy named Jesse Watters in which he interviewed a cultural critic. Riley Gaines who seems to have earned that title when she tied for fifth place in a swimming meet.

Anyway Ms. Gaines challenged us to be outraged by the existence of a disabled African American Santa in a wheelchair. She contended that this was proof of the war on Christmas. Well, I wanted to see for myself, so I googled “African American Santa in wheelchair” and up popped a picture of row upon row of Santa’s in wheelchairs ready to attack. The picture comes from a Target website – Target is selling these items.

Ms. Gaines seems to reserve her outrage for the African American disabled Santa and seems to have ignored the white disabled Santa’s. I assume this is because in her worldview it must be that a white Santa probably suffers repetitive back injuries given the lack of worker safety regulations and all those pesky chimneys to get through. So, it’s not that Santa is disabled that is problematic, but rather that Santa is not white.

I will not go into the simple reality that Santa does not exist. (The Daily Kos covers that quite adequately.) But it is impossible not to note that Ms. Gaines seemed to have fixated on the race of this imaginary and disabled Santa while giving a pass to the white disabled Santa. Maybe this is what right-wing America means by having a colorblind society.
